Bullies, boys and bikes
A new book about a schoolboy, bullies and scrambling, written by Carmarthen based author Huw Davies, is published today. The book will be launched at yr Atom, Carmarthen, on Friday evening 23rd November.
Sgramblo is a lively, humorous adventure story about bullies, family, loyalty and motorbikes, based in Maesunig School in a south Wales valley. It is a book that will appeal to boys but also includes strong female characters and has a father-son relationship at the heart of its story.
As an English teacher Huw Davies is aware of the lack of lightweight and humorous books for young boys:
"It's a challenge to encourage young boys to read and I was determined to write a credible and lighthearted portrayal of life in south Wales evolving from my experiences as a child and as a teacher.
"Having spent much of my life at school I have an ear for children's dialogue and I have hoped to convey the humor and intensity of the class, the quirky habits of some teacher and the ups and downs of school-life.”
Huw lives in Carmarthen with his wife and three children and teaches English at Ysgol BroTeifi, Llandysul. He was raised in Nantyffyllon and has a MA from the University of Glamorgan in Scriptwriting.Huw is a keen writer and as a result had the opportunity to contribute to the new BBC Wales series, Tourist Trap.
The book was originally published as Scrambled in English and was shortlisted in the junior fictional category of the Heart of Hawick Children's 2017 Awards. It has received extremely favorable reviews. Huw hopes that the Welsh version will be just as popular and will encourage more young boys to grab hold of a book!
