Amanda Palmer is a musician, one half of the Dresden Dolls and married to Neil Gaiman, writer. She supports herself through Patreon and here's what she says about it on her site there:
'HOLA COMRADES!
here we are again….! the next frontier of crowdfunding, the future of sustainable art, the final exam in asking & giving, whatever you wanna call it….this is it, we’re doin’ it.
ever since i launched this patreon community three years ago (!), i’ve been trying to find a succinct way of explaining what it is. this patreon is for people who want to help sustain my ability and freedom to MAKE WHAT I WANT, WHEN I WANT – liberated from commercial interests – by paying me a set amount of money every time i create something.
for an overview of how patreon works in general, they’ve got a great primer HERE to explain how it works. but basically: you give patreon your credit card # (or paypal) and you’re charged $1 (or more, if you choose) at the end every month to support me and my collaborators in our general art-making undertakings. your support also helps me to pay my general costs-of-doing-business (my office, my staff, all of life).'

Closer to home, Dr Dan Evans and Nathan Kusz are funding Desolation Radio - their Wales podcast about Welsh politics and culture, - on Patreon, too. This is funny, provoking and questioning content about the state of Wales today, challenging the status quo. Rapidly gaining cult following you can hear the shows at https://soundcloud.com/desolationradio and their Patreon page is here: https://www.patreon.com/desolationradio
Afer hearing Dan talk at Llandeilo Lit Fest, we want to hear more from these fellows...
We'd also like to hear more from Nation Cymru, after hearing their founder, Ifan Morgan Jones, with some astute analysis at the same session in Llandeilo. Billed as ' A news service by the people of Wales, for the people of Wales' Ifan is growing support for Nation Cymru via monthly subscription from £2 to £50 a month, to support long form, quality writing about Wales. Read all about it here: https://nation.cymru/
This is music and journalism supported by audiences, though channels that help direct chat between creators and audiences - without institutions, or creaming-off gatekeepers getting in the way. Amanda, Desolation Radio and Nation Cymru are all enthusiastic tweeters, as you might expect...
At FYI, we're champions and practitioners of this approach and planning to be even more so. If you like it too, you're welcome to join us here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/fyidiy/
