Back in April, we went up to Cardiff to a BBC Digital Cities event, which included a presentation on short form video: how to have big impact on big platforms. Here's a summary for you if you want to spend less time doing social media for better results.
Focussing on Facebook and You Tube, the presentation covered digital tropes or themes, which the BBC commissioned a company called Sign Salad to investigate. These were what they found made video popular across the web:
1. Cute Stuff: you know the idea, cats, dogs, children doing funny things...
2. Laugh Out Loud: we all need a good one now and then
3. Fail or Epic Fail Even: someone cocking it up...
4. For The Win: often depicted as #ftw apparently...epic achievement, this one
5.OMG: something extraordinary, warranting an 'oh my god'
6.Watercooler: common cause, like the GOT finale, or Brexit...
7.Lifehack: things to do to live life better/easier/more successfully
8.Moving,Uplifting: empathy and boosts
9. Celebrity As Peer: they're normal, just like us...
10.Nostalgia: those were the days, when we didn't have to think about all this social media stuff!
Many of us are overly familiar with all these themes and get hooked in by them, but if you're required to create a minimum amount of social media, then this list may hopefully offer some inspiration.
