Mark Drakeford has just been announced new leader of Welsh Labour, and in that role, First Minister.
Mark got 53.9% of the vote after it going to second round, with Vaughan Gething getting 41.4%. Eluned Morgan came third.
Born 63 years ago, Mark attended the Model School in Carmarthen before going on to a career as probation and youth worker, and then academic. He was Professor of Social Policy and Applied Social Sciences at Cardiff University for ten years, from 2003 - 2013. As Minister of Health and Social Services, he built a formidable reputation for defending Welsh Government in the UK media, with reason, analysis and integrity. He guided Wales's progressive presumed consent for organ donors act through the Senedd, the Human Transplantation (Wales) Act.
Mark speaks Welsh,and as a councilor he specialized in Welsh Medium education. His hobbies include tending his allotment and body boarding off the West Wales coast. More stories
